A silk saree is more than a garment — it's an heirloom. Whether you own a pure Kanjivaram, a Banarasi silk, or a luxurious art silk, proper care ensures your saree stays luminous and lasts for generations. Here's everything you need to know.
1. Always Dry Clean or Hand Wash
Pure silk sarees should ideally be dry cleaned after every 2–3 wears. If you prefer hand washing, use cold water and a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Never machine wash — the agitation damages delicate silk fibres and can cause irreversible shrinkage.
2. Never Wring or Twist
After rinsing, gently press the saree between two clean towels to remove excess water. Wringing or twisting silk distorts the weave and weakens the threads. Lay it flat on a dry towel and roll it up to absorb moisture.
3. Dry in Shade, Never in Direct Sunlight
Direct sunlight fades silk's rich colours and weakens the fabric. Always dry your saree in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Avoid hanging it on a metal rod — use a wooden or padded hanger to prevent rust stains and pressure marks.
4. Iron on Low Heat with a Cloth Barrier
Silk scorches easily. Set your iron to the lowest heat setting and always place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree. Iron on the reverse side to protect the sheen. Never use steam directly on zari or embroidered borders.
5. Store Correctly to Prevent Damage
Fold your silk saree along the original fold lines and wrap it in a soft muslin cloth — never plastic, which traps moisture and causes yellowing. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Re-fold every few months to prevent permanent crease lines.
Add a few neem leaves or cedar blocks to your storage to deter insects naturally, without the chemical damage of mothballs.
6. Handle Zari Borders with Extra Care
Zari (gold or silver thread) borders are delicate. Avoid spraying perfume or deodorant directly on the saree — the alcohol in these products tarnishes zari over time. Put on your saree after applying fragrance.
